In February 2018, Christiane Vollaire and I visited the island of Lesbos that has become an open-air refugee camp. The Moria camp, financed by the Greek government and the European Community, exists in disastrous and shameful sanitary, police and political conditions. Other camps have been set up, notably by the municipality of Mytilene. But one of them, Pikpa, was created by local activists according to rules that go against those laid down by the institutions: no barriers, no police control, co-management of the camp with the exiles. Pikpa is installed in a wood, near the sea, its buildings showing the eclecticism of the constructions, which makes it, in spite of the difficulties and the hostility of the authorities, a place of realized utopia. Ten photographs show this situation.
